Snare Drum
The snare drum is a simple variation of a common drum.
The word "snare" refers to the cords stretched across the
bottom head of the drum. These snares can be made of metal, gut, or
plastic, and when the drum is struck on the top, the snares vibrate
against the bottom head causing a very distinct sound.
Snare drums can be made from a variety of materials, but are most commonly
made of wood or metal. Different materials create different sounding
snare drums. The snare is one of the most recognizable sounds within
a drum set, and as such are an important part of the overall sound of
the kit.
Snare drums also come in many different sizes, but a typical diameter
is about 14 inches. The depth is the most common variation, as the more
shallow, the higher the pitch. Marching snare drums tend to be deeper
than average, sometimes as much as a full twelve inches deep. Most set
snares range from five to six inches deep, while piccolo snares can
be as small as three inches deep.
