Madison Smartt Bell and Wyn Cooper:

Novelist Madison Smartt Bell and poet Wyn Cooper conjure late night music for late night people on their new Gaff Music CD, Forty Words for Fear, a dark, brooding collection of bluesy, shotgun shack tunes. Late night music for late night people.

Esquire magazine dubbed it "sonic moonshine." The New York Observer proclaimed it "a thoroughly absorbing piece of work... Call it woodshed noir." And the Brattleboro (VT) Reformer noted: "Bell, Cooper and their all-star teammates found a way to pull from the arbitrary and the unconscious to fashion a feast for the ear and a maze for the mind."

In addition to Bell and Cooper, the album features Jim Brock on percussion, Don Dixon on bass, Mitch Easter on guitar and Chris Frank on keyboards, tuba, damn near anything else that can make a noise, and sharp hats. Jim Brock and Don Dixon co-produced. Forty Words for Fear was recorded at Easter’s Fidelitorium studio in Kernersville, NC.

WBUR in Boston recently aired a segment on Madison Smartt Bell, Wyn Cooper, and Forty Words for Fear, which was part of Saturday, August 2nd's "Weekend Edition" on NPR. Click here to listen to that piece.
