Guitar Strings

The guitar string is the most important component of a guitar, as they are how the instrument produces sound. There are many different string manufacturers, but essentially there are only two main designs: roundwound, flatwound. Other designs exist, but they are essentially variations of these two types. Flatwound and roundwound strings each have their own unique characteristics, and opinions vary from musician to musician.

Roundwound guitar strings are the simplest of the three. The core of the strings are wound very tightly with round wire and are quite easy to manufacture. The main drawback is excessive noise as the fingers slide along the string, but they are probably the most popular string for electric guitars.

Flatwound strings also have a core, but the wire wrapped around it is flat. This produces a smooth string that many consider to be more comfortable to play, although they produce a darker tone than that of roundwound strings. Flatwound strings are typically more expensive than roundwound strings as well.
