Drums
Drums are man's oldest musical instrument, dating back
to at least 6,000 B.C. It is believed that they were originally used
as man's first long-distance communication device and later evolved
into a musical instrument. Throughout their evolution however, they
have all maintained the same basic design principles.
They oldest drums were simply hollowed out logs and were beaten with
sticks to produce sound. As they evolved, animal skins were stretched
over one end allowing for easier tuning, and a larger array of possible
sounds. In modern times, drums come in a considerably wide assortment
of shapes and sizes, and are used in nearly every genre of music.
High-tech has recently invaded the ancient world of drums with the advent
of electronic and midi-controlled percussion stations. These new devices
reproduce the sounds of nearly every percussion instrument, and conveniently
store them in an easy to handle electronic interface. Genre's like Hip-hop
and Electronica have really pushed the development of these devices.
