Drum Kits
Knowing what kind of sound you want is an important aspect
of choosing a drum kit. Differences in materials, both of the body and
the heads can greatly affect the sound produced. Opinions vary greatly
with regard to drum sound, and as such personal taste is an important
factor.
The choice of which heads to use is an important factor in determining
overall sound and performance. Most drum kit heads are made from Mylar,
but you can purchase traditional skin heads as well. The decision to
use just a top head, or a top and bottom is also important as it greatly
affects the tone of the instrument.
Most drum kits utilize wood or wood laminates in their construction;
but alternative materials such as plastic and metal can also be used.
The thickness of the shell can largely determine the overall tone, with
more dense shells creating a low resonate, bright sound and thin shells
producing a highly resonate, overtone-laden hum.
